How It Works

Introducing….. The BiOM by iWalk

The BiOM is the first bionic lower-leg system to replace lost muscle function and allow you to walk without stress to the rest of your body—the way nature intended.  The transformational difference is clear.  Getting through your day will be much less work on the rest of your body. The BiOM relies on precision robotic engineering that actually powers you from one step to the next. It does the work so you can walk with little effort.  With the BiOM, walk where you want, do what you want.

What is the BiOM?

The BiOM is a bionic lower-leg system with reflexive powered plantar flexion that simulates the action of the ankle, Achilles tendon and calf muscles by propelling the amputee upwards and forwards during each walking step.  Unlike passive carbon-fiber prosthetic feet that return only 50% of the energy of a biological limb, the reflexive action in the BiOM performs net work on every step and returns 100% of the energy of a biological limb while accommodating for real time terrain changes, thus normalizing the individual's gait dynamics

So How Does the BiOM by iWalk Work?

The BiOM senses your ankle’s position and forces in real time and reacts seamlessly to your environment.  Translating approximately 250 data points per step though complex algorithms and circuit boards, the system tells the actuator to retract or extend. When the actuator retracts, it pulls the series spring up, similar to the loading of a catapult. When you reach the end of your step, the actuator retracts further and the spring releases stored energy. This is the powered plantar flexion that emulates the action of the calf muscles and Achilles tendon, that allows you to rise to your toes or push off from the ground. Without this action, your foot is lifeless and unresponsive. If you have a passive-elastic prosthetic foot, you have probably experienced how it can force your weight into your hip socket. In fact, you probably compensate with your entire body to control the lack of propulsion and function of a typical prosthetic foot. Instead, the BiOM works with you, complementing your natural motion.
